Întrerup programul obișnuit pentru câteva recomandări nefotbalistice. De câțiva ani încoace, știrile tot vuiesc despre moțiuni de cenzură, cursul euro, ratinguri de țară și incapacități de plată. Nu că lucrurile astea n-ar trebui știute, dar mă întreb câteodată dacă n-or fi copacii de care nu vedem pădurea.

M-am gândit destul de mult la chestia asta în ultima vreme, ajutat de câțiva oameni mai deștepți ca mine. Concluzia la care am ajuns e cea a lui Lucian Boia, și anume că, “România e o țară dereglată, cum să spun, într-o lume care și ea este dereglată. Noi am avut neșansa să pierdem anii buni ai Occidentului și am intrat și noi în lume cînd aceasta era dereglată”.

O țară dereglată

E limpede că asta e România actuală, de vreme ce 8 din 10 români sunt nefericiți, iar alți (sau aceiași) 8 din 10 vor să emigreze. Ce miră e încrederea și speranța pe care oamenii și-o pun într-un politician sau un partid, când de fapt problemă nu e doar cu unii sau cu ceilalți ci cu însuși sistemul prin care ajung acolo. Altfel spus, aparatul de putere care conduce o țara e o birocrație inextricabilă. Și asta e o problemă:

Pleasing your teachers, pleasing your superiors, picking a powerful mentor and riding his coattails until it’s time to stab him in the back. Jumping through hoops. Getting along by going along. Being whatever other people want you to be, so that it finally comes to seem that, like the manager of the Central Station, you have nothing inside you at all. Not taking stupid risks like trying to change how things are done or question why they’re done. Just keeping the routine going.

O lume dereglată

Când vezi lumea asta în care se trăiește tot mai mult pe datorie, e la îndemână să dai vina pe capitalism. Asta deși știm că e singurul sistem economic care generează prosperitate pe scară largă. Și atunci? Problema e capitalismul deșănțat, fără mamă fără tată, în care oamenii ajung să valoreze tot mai puțin. Cam asta spune David Simon, creatorul The Wire, în mai toate interviurile:

I do believe that raw, unencumbered capitalism, absent any social framework, absent any sense of community, without regard to the weakest and most vulnerable classes in society – it’s a recipe for needless pain, needless human waste, needless tragedy, and ultimately a coarsening of our society.

Cum s-a ajuns aici?

Ca in orice belea cu adevărat mare, cauza nu e una singură. Dar pot să vă spun una dintre cele mai importante.

În 1976, doi profesori americani de finanțe au publicat o teză care avea să revolutioneze gândirea economică. Concluzia lor era că singurul scop al unei afaceri e să le aducă un profit cât mai mare acționarilor. În timp, aceast tip de gândire s-a răspândit atât de mult încât și ciobanii români au aflat că “la capitalism nu există decât banul”.

When forced to answer the question, “Why business?”many would respond with some variant of “to make money.” Stated more precisely, the traditional business school direction to corporate managers is to “maximize shareholder return.”

În multe feluri, asta e paradigma care ne-a adus unde suntem astăzi. De asta supermarketurile sunt pline de produse cancerigene, ziarele pline de pornografie, de asta Apple face 13 miliarde de dolari profit cu prețul vieții și demnității unor oameni. Eh, mofturi moralicești, care n-au loc într-un sistem profund amoral cum e capitalismul sălbatic.

Așa o fi, dar acum avem și rezultatele, și știm că cei doi finanțiști americani au greșit:

The proponents of shareholder value maximization and stock-based executive compensation hoped that their theories would focus executives on improving the real performance of their companies and thus increasing shareholder value over time. Yet, precisely the opposite occurred. In the period of shareholder capitalism since 1976, executive compensation has exploded while corporate performance has declined. Maximizing shareholder value turned out to be the disease of which it purported to be the cure.

Care e leacul atunci?

Același care a fost dintotdeauna, etica, principiile morale, afacerile făcute nu doar ca să tragi un câștig ci ca să servești un client cum te pricepi mai bine, și da, să trăiești din asta.

Unless capitalism has an ethical boundary, it will always create two problems. One is the problem of insatiability, never knowing when to stop, always wanting just a little more. The other problem—you can see this very clearly in America today—is commodification. The good society draws a line between what is and what is not for sale, but, in modern America, almost everything is up for sale, including much that should not be. We need powerful faith with strong ethics and knowledge of what is legitimate to buy and sell—that’s the market at its best—but certain things are not for buying and not for selling, and we should know why.

Nu mă pricep nici la economie și nici la afaceri, dar oamenii pe care i-am citat m-au ajutat să înțeleg câte ceva din ce se întâmplă acum în lume, și am zis că nu v-ar strica nici vouă a little food for thought.

Why do I bring this up? Well, it comes from trying to explain what being a fan means – to me. I realise this is personal, and I don’t want to suggest there’s a “right” way to be a fan, but supporting Sunderland was never a choice. It just was. I’ve spent a lot of time in Argentina and people, naturally, have asked if I have an Argentinian team. My then-girlfriend and her family are Boca Juniors fans, and so I tried to support them, but the truth was that I didn’t care. I didn’t feel sick with nerves when they took the lead, and I certainly didn’t feel tears pricking at my eyes when I recalled their greatest triumphs.

I don’t really like being so emotional about Sunderland, but I am. And of course it has nothing to do with whichever bunch of players happens to be wearing the candystripes this season. Nothing to do with the manager, the style of play or success. It’s to do with home, and family, and a sense of the club as representative of a strand of belonging stretching back generations. My dad’s last game was the 4-0 defeat to Manchester United on Boxing Day 2007, but in a sense he has been with me at every game I’ve been at since. What I hadn’t realised till last year is that his father, who died before I was born, had been coming with us for years as well.

Asta apropo de o discuție mai veche. Știu, nimeni n-are impresia despre el însuși că e glory-hunter, dar nu știu cum se face că fani Liverpool/Barça/Man Utd vezi la tot pasul, în timp ce n-am cunoscut încă pe nimeni care să țină cu Sunderland (sau orice altă echipă din afară care n-a câștigat nimic în ultimii 10 ani).

They can’t think about or read the game. Things have become too easy for football players: high salaries, a good life, with a maximum of five hours work a day and so they can’t concentrate, can’t think about the game.

Barcelona’s players are completely the opposite. Their players are permanently thinking about the game, about their movement, about how to provoke their opponent with the position of the ball.

Acesta este Bucureştiul, oraş al plăcerii pentru câţiva şi al sărăciei pentru ceilalţi.

Podişul Copoului e o vastă promenadă unde circulă echipajele la modă, e locul de întâlnire al societăţii elegante, femeile sunt atrase aici de splendoarea priveliştii.

Fanatismul oriental se mulţumeşte să spună: Mare e Dumnezeu, şi în lenea sa neputincioasă, aşteaptă ajutorul divin; activitatea occidentală pune în practică un alt precept: Ajută-te şi Cerul te va ajuta; asta îi face bine.

Occidentalii să-şi vadă de treburile lor, se spunea, să se aranjeze cum le-o plăcea, dar să fim lăsaţi în pace.

Fondul religiei se află mai mult în practicile exterioare decât în convingeri. Ceremoniile cultului se adresează mai mult simţurilor decât spiritului; acest cult ne apare mai puţin epurat decât în Occident şi mult mai aproape de pagânism. Nu se prea merge la slujbe; pentru români, religia constă în urmarea strictă a posturilor, în plecăciuni şi semne ale crucii împărţite cu dărnicie când trec prin faţa fiecărei biserici sau chiar în faţă unei simple icoane.

Prin ce stranie anomalie e ţinută în această stare de neştiinţă şi de mizerie o clasă de oameni (n. a. clerul) chemată să exercite o influenţă moralizatoare asupra maselor?

La Bucureşti ca şi în Grecia, tâlharii şi jandarmii trăiesc într-o armonie emoţionantă.

Societatea română e condamnată să lâncezească în acest cerc vicios. Nu o putem învinui, nu putem decât să o plângem.

Femeia e mai bună decât bărbatul în România, sub triplul raport al inteligenţei, educaţiei şi inimii.

Nicăieri nu domnesc prejudecăţile şi superstiţiile ca în Moldo-Valahia. Se păstrează aici credinţe greşite, transmise de către tradiţie, la care se adaugă obiceiuri în uz la ruşi, unguri, greci şi ţigani.

Contrastul se află peste tot, o repetăm până la saturaţie; peste tot doar splendoare şi mizerie, lux rar şi sărăcie hidoasă, suprafaţă strălucitoare, interior corupt.

Românii să se vadă şi să se judece în acest tablou fidel; să afle ce le lipseşte pentru a ajunge la nivelul civilizaţiei. Să ne fie recunoscători că nu ascundem nimic; răul trebuie cunoscut pentru a-l vindeca.

E o selecţie subiectivă, cartea musteşte de tot felul de observaţii care rămân deprimant de actuale. Dacă vă plac genul ăsta de chestii, v-o recomand!
